Until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf was the most extensive large housing estate in the GDR. However, the district of Marzahn, which developed from a medieval village built around a village green, is in contrast to this image, as it has a more village-like character. This can be seen in the village centre, which has been a listed building since 1977. All in all, the grey image that prevailed in GDR times has given way to a colourful variety. The village church, meadows and old trees are presented in the village village of Alt-Marzahn, while the Flower Tower, an 18-storey building with landscape motifs by a French group of artists, attracts attention along the avenue of the cosmonauts.
Art and culture are strongly represented in Marzahn. Regular readings, concerts or exhibitions as well as artistic workshops take place. In addition, real estate is available at relatively low prices. Many of the old prefabricated concrete slab apartments have also been renovated.
